Once again, the Arctic made me fight for every inch of every mile north. I've never seen ice as bad as this - impenetrable rubble stretching as far as either horizon, topped off with plenty of fresh, sticky, drifted snow. A bombed out metropolis with a million tons of icing sugar dumped on top.

Every minute of today was back breaking work - the sledge kept falling down holes, my ski skins needed repairing twice, a near whiteout made it hard to navigate and when I took my skis off for the worst bits, I sank thigh-deep in snow.

Things don't seem so bad now I'm tucked up in bed with my mp3 player on and a belly full of chicken curry (see photo!) but it was definitely one of the toughest days yet. So much work and so little (a shade under four miles) to show for it.

A few people have asked about daylight and about the time zone I'm in. The daylight increases day by day - two weeks ago there was roughly six hours of true daylight. Now it's double that and pretty soon I'll have 24-hour sunlight. As far as time goes, I'm six hours and 28 mins ahead of UTC or Greenwich mean time. I'll explain why tomorrow...

Today's dedication goes to Legend Internet (and Mark Elders in particular) who host this site and have been sorting out my technological headaches for nearly three years. Thanks!

Also, a big hello to Mungo, Carzee, Derestrictor, Joust, Flasher, Mrs Fish, Petrol Ted et al. I'm sure I'll see some of you in the summer...

# SENDING LOTS OF WARM AND ENCOURAGING THOUGHTS

Hi Ben,

Just wanted to let you know that everyone here in our office in Richmond is thinking of you, marvelling at your achievements (awesome) and willing you on with plenty of positive vibes and encouragement.

Because so many people have you in their thoughts and prayers there will never be a moment when someone is not thinking for you. Just hold that in your heart when you're feeling low and thinking this challenge seems insurmountable. We know you can do it.

Warm thoughts and good wishes
Sylvie

# Dedication well deserved

Mark Elders is well worthy of a mention Ben as he's been championing your expedition to anyone and everyone that will listen - hence why my day now revolves around reading your latest dispatch. Keep up the good work and you'll have to pop into Legend and tell us all about it when you've finished.

# Keep it UP!

We are still following your progress every day. What you are teaching about persevera
nce is awesome! Technology repairwork in the arctic circle, more groundbreaking adventure. Keep it up. You Rock!

# Wow!

Very impressed with your progress and with your web site - very slick indeed, especially the daily updates from the frozen north. Actually, you make it sound like so much fun, you'll soon run into Arctic tourists, no doubt. All the best.

# What have you been listening to lately?

Hi Ben! You're doing a great job! Thank you so much for the dispatches...thinking about you and the other brave expeditioners out there, quite often. Wishing you nothing but the best of everything. Hopefully you'll be leaving the rubble ice behind soon and make some good headway. What's on the mp3 player tonight? :-) Wishing you a great Sunday! -- Nikki

# good luck

Ben good luck to you on your journey. Keep warm and my thoughts and prayers are with you. You are very brave to do something like this. Hope you make it to where you are going, soon. GOOD LUCK!!

# Thank you for inviting us into your (temporary) home...

You will soon have 10% of your travel distance behind you. I hope that you have more favorable winds and better travel surface for the rest of your jorney. Someday, you will be telling your children and grandchildren about your adventures.

Looks like you cook freeze-dried food. Is that as good as food that hasn't had the moisture removed from it? I need to buy some and see how it works.

Take care and know that many are praying for you and the rest who share your journey.

# Another day with you...

Sending yet another angel your way to keep you safe another day - press on!

# Hi Brave Ben

Just want you to know that you are on the minds of so many. You are never alone and on the minds of so many. Just draw on the strengths God has given you. Remember with God all things are possible. When the going gets tough He will carry you.

By Jeanette on Sunday, 21 March - 04:16 am -0800

# NEVER QUIT

When the going gets tough,
the tough gets going.
You are definitely that!
Keep your eyes fixed on the finish line,
and keep running the race...
So many of us out here are with you,
pulling and praying for you.
I am so very proud of you and really
do hope to meet you some day.
You are an inspiration to so many...
I am taking a writing course and
told my class this week that I have
begun a list of people I want to meet
and have my picture taken with.
YOU ARE ON THE TOP OF MY LIST!
Continued success,

# Good Show Mate..

Hi Ben, From one Englishman to another, Good Show Mate. You really have got some determination and I follow your progress like clockwork. I check on you before I check my email for the day! Hope your chicken curry was tasty. ( I can't get that here in Wisconsin) Everyone here is complaining about the snow and ice and I just have to chuckle as I think how your weather is! It's spring but our snow and ice will disappear in no time (unlike yours). As they say here in the States..."Have a good day" Take care and God Speed....Dave

By Dave on Saturday, 20 March - 11:23 pm -0800

# Soon you will pick up the rhythm

Ben:
Perhaps as you proceed further, you will find better navigation. Getting past the new ice(?) that flies around and then builds up must really, really be tough. Little-steps-for-now. Soon you will be able to pick up the rhythm (flow, force, power).
I'm sending my best thoughts for lots of good traveling conditions tomorrow.
Three cheers for that wonderful determination, it will pay off for you.
Cissy,
Texas

# Determination

Your determination against all odds is awesome. You are a living legend. Many of us can learn a lot from you, meaning myself (of course). In another email 'bob' said he was going to use you as a role model for his 4 year old son ... I am a grandmother, Ive been around for a while, but I am still learning, I think I can use a role model too. On the days I think that I'm having 'a bad day', I'm going to think of you and tell myself 'would you like to trade places with him?' ... my insignificant trials pale in comparison.

Keep up the good work, we at watching you and following you via cyber space.

By Eileen on Saturday, 20 March - 08:01 pm -0800

# Sharing some sunshine

Great going Ben, wish I could share some of the
75 degree weather in Arkansas with you. You
are an inspiration in that you are doing something
many of us can only dream about, but through your
efforts and your reports we can partially live it with
you. Keep up the good work.....H.W.

# Mr Perseverence

Total admiration for you. After you didn't quite get there on your first trip it would have been easy to give up & stay at your Mums watching daytime tv. You've certainly got guts. Good luck. We're all thinking of you. By the way do you talk to yourself at all or just play air guitar ?

By Sheila on Saturday, 20 March - 06:04 pm -0800

# A Picture of a Thousand Words

Hi, Ben
Noticed in your statistics, terrain effect, as travel time increased and daily distance, fell alittle. However, perserverance prevailed, and bedding down for a hot meal must be either a pleasure or a lot of work, at the end of the day. May the force be with you, Jedi!

# Greetings from South Dakota

Best wishes for your health and safety and for the successful completion of your trip. I live in the Black Hills of SD where it is just Spring. We have only a bit of snow in the yard where it drifted in deeper. The birds returned this week, robins, blackbirds, geese, ducks and bluebirds. This is the time when eagles return to the open water although we have not seen any yet. I am driving to Minnesota this next week to make maple syrup. The sap is starting to flow. Best wishes- Mark S.

# The Ice Man

Hi Ben,

Sounds like you had a tough day. But at least you are another 3.4nm closer to your goal? I can't believe that you are only 26 years old. You have accomplished so much in your life already. I'll be using you as a role model for my 4 year old son some day. you have incredible determination.

I am SO proud - Thursday, 18th March 2004

Not of my skiing, the mileage I've covered, or the fact that I've been out here two weeks, but of the repair job I've just carried out on the charger for the iPAQ I write these updates on. I use Energizer lithium batteries to power the iPAQ, my ...read more

Rubble trouble - Friday, 19th March 2004

Incredibly, my dodgy repair to the battery charger is still working, although I suffered a nosebleed last night which I suspect resulted from inhaling all that solder (or perhaps it was just the excitement)... Anyhow, a crazy day today - loads of ...read more

Sun dog

Sun dog - Sunday, 21st March 2004

I saw a beautiful sun dog today - hopefully the photo shows it clearly enough. A parhelion is the technical term, although I'm not sure exactly what causes it. So here's my idea - a little competition: the first school to reply with the correct ...read more

Aarrrggghh!! - Monday, 22nd March 2004

This is getting ridiculous. I woke up this morning to find my tent flapping like crazy. The wind had turned during the night and had been busy blowing me backwards. It had also snowed heavily which sounds normal, but in reality it hardly ever snows ...read more
