Dispatches: A quick update... - Friday, 14th May 2004

Oh the guilt! The shame! I often say that part of my motivation is to encourage other young people away from the tv and computer games and into the great outdoors. And how am I whiling away my last few hours (hopefully) in this incredible wilderness? Why, playing solitaire on my iPAQ, of course...

Actually, that's not all I'm doing - the pilots have asked that I keep a detailed weather log for them, with all sorts of important sounding headings - 'horizon distinction' and 'contrast resolution' are my favourites. It's a glorious day at the moment, which bodes well for a pick up.

I've found the best bit of flat(ish) 'multi-year' ice I've seen in ages, I've marked out the four corners of a runway and I've flattened the lumpy bits with my snow shovel. It's just long enough, although if the pilots aren't happy with it, they'll land nearby and I'll have to leg it over.

If all goes well, they should land at 1700-1800 UTC (Greenwich Mean Time in old money). So, as I write this, I have another 6-7 hours to wait.

Hopefully my next update will be from terra firma - I haven't set foot on land for 71 days now! I'll keep you posted...

# An adventure to remember

HI

the last couple of months have been fascinating tracking your progress, supporting the Re-supply, living the trials and tribulations of falling through ice, through your highs and lows, broken boots and that massive beard you've now grown. It's been a real eye opening experience to what people can achieve if we set our minds to it.

I shall miss the whole experience. You truly went the extra mile as did Tony many a night. With you and Tony and the Serco team behind you we all ensured this was a first class adventure from start to finish.

I look forward to seeing you when you get back, providing you have had a bath first.

Well done again, words are so small in comparison to your achievement.

See you soon

Marc

# Warmer Climates

Hi Ben,

Congratulations again on all that you have accomplished over the past 2 months. You showed so much determination in spite of the obstacles that you encountered, which are too numerous to even mention here. Despite being alone up there, I would say that you made more than a few friends through your daily updates on this web site. I hope we are able to stay in contact with you and learn what your next venture may be? Enjoy the change in clothes, a good hot meal, warm bed- good night sleep, and being able to rejoin your family.

Ben, you've done an remarkable journey, and although it's cutten' short, you can, and have to be proud of yourself. This has been one helluva ride, and we readers enjoyed all of your dispatches (Yeah, I know, easy to say when one is sitting in a warm room, and having all the comforts, but still..) You have done well!

Best wishes,

# Glad to see the end of the voyage

I am so proud for all your accomplishments -both on the ice and state of mind. I am glad to see you will be ending the expedition on a healthy and safe note. I have been quietly watching your progress since the beginning and feel very selfish in saying I wish it would not end. I will truly miss your daily adventures. Please try to see if there is a way for us to follow your future endevours. I am certain great things will be coming your way.

# I'm going to miss you man!

Ben,
I have been following your smell for quite a ways now. I haven't been able to stop thinking about you, since our first wet encounter.
I was hoping that you would dump Val and stay here with me.
That remark you made about not knowing if I was a Mr.or Mrs. kind of hurt, but I forgive you.
Please stay with me, I will keep you warm and I am excellent at catching fish.

Well, if not will you at least send me a postcard.

I could go home with you...all I need is fresh fish and a bathtub...tell Val I promise not to piddle on the floor.

No...well...I guess I'll just have to relive that one moment of deep understanding when our eyes locked across that soggy lead.

Take care of yourself, hope to see you again...
Thanks for not bopping me on the head with your ski pole.

# . . .future encounters!

Ben: I know you must want to ski, seeing that there are such beautiful pans. You will make it fine. I did a little meditation this morning, bidding you well and hoping you found a place for the plane. I actually felt very secure that you had things in "ship-shape."

The adventure you have had this 2004 will open up new doors for you. This, of course is basically because of your beautiful attitude and your problem-solving abilities.

I look forward to future encounters!
Cissy,

PS: Many, many thanks to SERCO. What a wonderful service you have provided, you will just never know. C

# Wish I was there......

Drove 350 miles round trip to Felixstowe again today, far more boring than sitting on the ice waiting!
Almost seasick after spending half an hour with my head upside down in the engine well of Mac's boat. Didn't puke (just!) but did get the engine running.
What a day..........

Many pints of beer waiting in the midlands for you.

# Good Morning!!!

Yawn,
Good morning, yeah I slept in.
Lovely, warm, gazillion thread-count cotton sheets-trying to make you look forward to your return to civilization, buddy!

I don't want to hear any more crap about shame or guilt. We are more concerned about you making it home safely than whether YOU are ready to come back! It would be no consolation for us to hear that 'died doing what he loved' crap. I've had enough.

Not to mention the fact that you've come so far! I spent yesterday sneezing from hay fever and bathing a cat...well...not my cat...somebodies cat. I don't know...I was sooo bored waiting for the next dispatch. Could you wite slower so it will last longer?

Now I'm getting up and taking a shower. The hot cocoa from last night has gotten cold and is making the sheets stick to my butt!
Just bring your ice-loving, 'I know I can make it, just one more step' ego back home RIGHT AWAY!

And you better dispatch as soon as possible.

All my WARMEST thoughts,
Tricia
PS. Don't get frostbite on your a--, while you are sitting on it playing solitaire.

By Miss Seal on Friday, 14 May - 04:42 pm -0700

# What a trip

I have been following you all along. WHAT A TRIP You are very courageous. To bad you had all the delays at the beginning to get on the ice. The weather, what can one say, next TRIP it will be better.
I enjoyed your dispatches daily, worried when they were late. Can not help but wonder at what you have acomplished all the hardships, the leads the whiteouts the temp, and who could forget the boot! All I can say is what a TRIP! CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!
What is next for you ? Good luck in whatever you do. God Bless! MIKE

By Michael Harper on Friday, 14 May - 04:29 pm -0700

# Congratulations...

And here's to a second go at it (with an earlier departure) in the near future.

God speed, Ben!

By Silus Grok on Friday, 14 May - 04:08 pm -0700

# Glad and Sad

I lurked every day of your adventure, posted twice, told your story often. Well done to all involved and to you Ben, CONGRATS!
We will miss your posts and the view into your world and ours. May your future be full of growth and adventure. You inspired many more than you could know. And come on over to Canada and see the southern parts! We are bloomin'.

# Good Find

Hi Ben,

Well done AGAIN, managed to find a suitable peice of ice to land the silver bird, don't worry as the pilots are used to conditions there? just hope it does'nt warm up to much.

You wll need quite some time to read all your messages of support, you are an insperation to Young and Old alike.

I can just imagin your face when you arrive home!

You are a star, well done.

By Peter Goddard on Friday, 14 May - 01:50 pm -0700

# Off the ice

Hope that you get off the ice OK and that the conditions stay favorable for you. It is a pity that the weather has caused your expedition to be cut short, and with all the delays at the beginning of the trip it must make it all the more frustrating that you could not get further towards Canada.

Still you have got to the Pole and been an inspiration to many around the world who have followed your journey. Congratulations are required for all that you have achieved even though the original goal has not been met.

Well done,

George

# Good Morning!

Logged on to read any posts I missed yesterday, and here you are! Relieved to read that the weather is clear and you found an area for the plane to land. Must be a bit difficult sitting there waiting, especially if you've now resorted to playing solitaire, but glad you had the time to post an update on your situation.

Continue to stay safe and I suppose next time we hear from you, you'll be on dry land. I imagine at this point, you're excited about returning home to your friends and loved ones.

Take care, Ben. I don't know what time you posted this latest dispatch, but I'll be thinking of you throughout the day.
